DID THE FATHER ABANDON JESUS AT THE CROSS?

It is often believed that the Father rejected or abandoned Jesus at the cross. This conclusion, though common, does not hold under careful theological and scriptural examination.

The Father did not abandon Jesus at the cross. He was fully present in the Son, executing reconciliation. As it is written, “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself” (2 Corinthians 5:19).

Jesus’ cry was not a rupture in divine union, it was a deliberate invocation. When He voiced the opening line of Psalm 22, He was activating a known prophetic text, directing His audience to interpret the moment through Scripture, not through appearance.

The Psalms formed the theological memory of Israel. They were recited, sung, and internalized. By echoing Psalm 22, Jesus was not expressing separation, but unveiling fulfillment. What seemed like abandonment to the natural eye was, in fact, alignment with a predetermined redemptive script.

The cross was not the breakdown of the relationship between the Father and the Son, it was the climax of their unified intent. The Son was not forsaken by the Father; He was given for humanity.

What appeared as rejection by men became the mechanism of redemption by God. In the very act where Christ was refused, access was being secured. Through His rejection, our acceptance was established in the Beloved.
